A CALL FOR ARTISTS:

APRIL FOOL’S FIRST FRIDAY: A TWO HOUSE EXHIBIT

Where ignorance is bliss, ‘Tis folly to be wise. -Thomas Gray

The Machine Shop and Blank Canvas Café at Dream Catcher’s present a call for artists for a collaborative show in which artists will create works for a “House of Folly” and/or “A House of Wisdom”, based on a reflection of Thomas Gray’s Poem.

Poet Thomas Gray once wrote, “Where ignorance is bliss, ‘tis folly to be wise” (Ref 2).

In his Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College, Gray tells the story of “a worldly-wise Eton student as he considers the harsh realities that the now-carefree young Etonians will one day face”(Ref. 2). Gray expresses a concern for an ignorant doomed society but yields to the idea that wisdom is subject to the context of our environment.

The House of Folly (will be shown in one gallery):

The House of Folly represents a lack of good sense commonly associated with innocence. The residents are wildly happy, but present a foolish demeanor to the outside world. Naivety and bliss is the foundation for this house.

The House of Wisdom (will be shown in one gallery):

The House of Wisdom depicts enlightenment to all who reside in this house. A burden or blessing, wisdom often weighs heavy on the intellectual. Knowledge and burden is the foundation for this house.
